How to Use This Tool

One pound equals 16 ounces. Multiply pounds by 16 to get ounces, or divide ounces by 16 to go the other way.

1.5 lbs to oz works out to 24 (1.5 × 16). This is weight, the same “oz” printed on a kitchen scale or a shipping label — not the fluid ounce used for liquid volume.

Formula both directions

  • Pounds to ounces: oz = lbs × 16
  • Ounces to pounds: lbs = oz ÷ 16

Why 16 is the number

The pound-ounce split isn’t base-10 like the metric system. It comes from the old avoirdupois weight system.

Avoirdupois splits a pound into 16 parts, the way a foot splits into 12 inches. Sixteen divides evenly by 2, 4, and 8, which made it easier to work with by hand than a base-10 split.

There’s a separate troy pound, used historically for precious metals, that splits into 12 ounces instead of 16. That’s a common mix-up. But the 16-ounce avoirdupois pound is what covers everyday US weight — food packaging, body weight, shipping.

Worked examples

48 oz to lb: 48 ÷ 16 = 3 lb exactly. That clean division is one reason “48 oz to lb” gets searched so often — it’s a common bag size for rice, flour, or cat litter.

2.2 lbs to oz: 2.2 × 16 = 35.2 oz. This value shows up constantly because 2.2 lb approximates 1 kilogram, so people use it as a bridge point when converting kilograms to ounces.

72 oz to lbs: 72 ÷ 16 = 4.5 lb, or 4 lb 8 oz.

160 oz to lbs: 160 ÷ 16 = 10 lb exactly. That round number comes up for larger shipments or bulk goods.

For scale: 16 oz (1 lb) is close to a standard loaf of sandwich bread. 48 oz (3 lb) sits in the range of a small chihuahua or a large bag of sugar.

The mistake that actually matters

Just like feet and inches, the trap is reading a decimal pound as if it were already ounces. Someone converts 21 oz and gets 1.3125 lb.

They see “.3125” and assume that means “3 ounces left over.” It doesn’t.

Multiply 0.3125 lb by 16 and you get 5 oz, not 3. So 21 oz is actually 1 lb 5 oz. The decimal part of a pound answer needs a second multiplication by 16 to find the real ounce remainder.

This shows up most with shipping weights and recipe conversions. A mislabeled remainder can throw off a scale reading, or push a package over a rate-bracket cutoff by a few ounces.

Converting body weight and shipping weights

This decimal-remainder trap shows up constantly in real life. A shipping label that reads “1.3125 lb” isn’t intuitive to anyone.

Carriers and scales usually display it as “1 lb 5 oz” instead — the same 21 oz example above, just flipped into the format people actually read.

Body weight works the same way. A scale reading of 2.1875 lb for a newborn’s weight gain converts to 2 lb 3 oz, or 35 oz total. That’s how it actually appears on a growth chart.

Once you’re comfortable with divide-by-16-then-remainder-times-16, you can go either direction without a calculator for most common values.

A note on kilograms

Because so many scales and food labels show both units, the bridge point is worth knowing. One kilogram is about 2.2046 pounds, or 35.27 ounces.

That’s why 2.2 lbs to oz gets searched so heavily. Someone reads “1 kg” on a metric label and wants the US ounce equivalent.

They convert kg to lb first (× 2.2046), then lb to oz (× 16). That lands on roughly 35.3 oz per kilogram — a two-step conversion, not a single ratio, so it’s worth memorizing on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ounces are in a pound?
Sixteen ounces, using the standard avoirdupois pound — the one used for food, body weight, and most everyday US weight measurements.

How many ounces is 1.5 lbs?
24 ounces (1.5 × 16), a common weight for a package of ground meat or a small roast.

Is a pound always 16 ounces, or does it change for precious metals?
For everyday avoirdupois weight, yes, always 16. Troy weight, used for gold and silver, runs on a different pound made of 12 troy ounces — a separate system, not a rounding difference.

How many pounds is 56 oz?
56 ÷ 16 = 3.5 lb, or 3 lb 8 oz.

Why does 2.2 lbs to oz come up so often in searches?
Because 2.2 lb approximates 1 kilogram. People converting a metric weight on a food label or scale often go through pounds first: kg to lb (× 2.20462), then to oz (× 16).

How do I convert ounces to pounds when the number doesn’t divide evenly by 16?
Divide by 16 to get a decimal. Then multiply just that decimal by 16 again to find the remainder. For example, 26 oz ÷ 16 = 1.625 lb, and 0.625 × 16 = 10, so the answer is 1 lb 10 oz — not “1 lb and 0.625 oz.”
