A common mistake with this conversion

The most frequent error is misreading a ruler that shows both centimeter and millimeter markings. Centimeter lines are usually the tall, bold ones with numbers next to them.

Millimeter lines are the shorter, unlabeled ticks in between — ten of them per centimeter. People sometimes count millimeter ticks as if they were centimeters.

That turns a 47 mm measurement into a claimed 47 cm.

That’s off by a factor of 10. It’s usually obvious once you picture the actual size — 47 cm is nearly half a meter, while 47 mm is under two inches.

A second mistake happens in the other direction: dropping the decimal point when converting mm to cm. 15 mm ÷ 10 should be 1.5 cm, but it’s easy to write “15 cm” out of habit if you’re moving fast.

This happens most often when copying numbers from a spec sheet or product listing. The millimeter number is always exactly 10 times the centimeter number. A good sanity check: your converted value should have one fewer digit, or one more decimal place, than the figure you started with.

1 cm, or 10 mm, is close to the width of a standard pencil or the diameter of a large button. 15 mm, or 1.5 cm, is roughly the width of a AA battery.
