How the Tile Calculator Works
Enter the floor dimensions, tile dimensions, and a waste percentage (typically 10%). The calculator tells you how many tiles to buy.
The Formula
Tiles needed = ⌈(Floor area / Tile area) × (1 + Waste %)⌉
Floor area = length × width (in meters)
Tile area = (tile length / 100) × (tile width / 100) (converting cm to m)
Why Add Waste?
You’ll need extra tiles for:
- Cutting tiles to fit at edges and corners
- Breakage during installation (5-10%)
- Future repairs (matching dye lots may be impossible later)
- Pattern matching (diagonal layouts waste more)
A 10% waste allowance is standard for simple layouts; use 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts.
