How to Use This Tool
One kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds. To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilogram value by 2.20462.
Formula
pounds = kilograms × 2.20462
kilograms = pounds ÷ 2.20462
Worked example: 75.3 kg × 2.20462 = 166.01 lbs.
Reverse: 150 lbs ÷ 2.20462 = 68.04 kg.

Pounds to kilograms
Going the other way is just as common. Divide by 2.20462, or multiply by 0.453592.
- 150 lbs to kg: 150 ÷ 2.20462 = 68.04 kg.
- Check it a second way: 150 × 0.453592 = 68.04 kg. Same answer.
- 40 kg to lbs: 40 × 2.20462 = 88.18 lbs.
- 160 kg to lbs: 160 × 2.20462 = 352.74 lbs.
- 220 kg to lbs: 220 × 2.20462 = 485.02 lbs.
Strongman and powerlifting loads often get quoted in kg internationally. US lifters then convert those figures to lbs to compare against home gym plates.
A fast mental shortcut, and where it breaks
Doubling a kilogram figure gets you close to pounds for a rough guess. 75 kg doubled is 150.
The real answer is 165.35 lbs, off by about 9%. That gap is fine for a gut check.
It is not fine for anything precision-sensitive. Medication dosing, luggage weight limits, and shipping costs all need the exact 2.20462 multiplier.
Where this conversion comes up most
Body weight. Most countries track body weight in kilograms. The US uses pounds. A gym program or a doctor’s chart imported from outside the US often needs converting before the numbers make sense to a US reader. 75.3 kg becomes 166.01 lbs.
Airline baggage limits. International carriers often post 23 kg as the standard checked-bag limit. US domestic carriers often post 50 lbs. But 23 kg converts to only 50.71 lbs, not a clean match. A traveler who assumes the two numbers are interchangeable can end up half a kilogram over the actual US limit and get charged an overweight fee at check-in.
Strength equipment. A “20 kg bar” is 44.09 lbs. A “45 lb bar” is a different bar entirely, even though gym-goers in each country call theirs the standard Olympic bar.
Shipping and freight. International quotes usually list kg. US logistics quotes usually list lbs. A 100 kg pallet is 220.46 lbs — worth converting before comparing rates from carriers on different unit systems.
Where 2.20462 comes from
The kilogram is the metric system’s base unit for mass. The pound comes from a separate, older system.
In 1959, the US and Commonwealth countries fixed the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kg. Inverting that number gives 2.20462, the figure used to go from kg to lbs.
Common mistakes people make
Rounding too early. Someone converting 79.8 kg might round the multiplier to 2.2 instead of 2.20462, getting 175.56 lbs instead of the correct 175.93 lbs. The gap looks small, but it adds up across repeated conversions.
Mixing up the direction. Multiplying instead of dividing turns 150 lbs into 330.69 lbs instead of the correct 68.04 kg. Always check which unit you’re starting from before picking multiply or divide.
Trusting the doubling shortcut for anything official. A shipping label that estimates 220 kg as “440-something lbs” by doubling is off by nearly 45 lbs from the real 485.02 lbs. That gap can trigger a freight surcharge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pounds is 70 kg?
154.32 lbs. This weight sits near the middle of many adult weight charts, so it shows up often in gym and medical contexts.
Is 1 kg heavier than 1 lb?
Yes. One kg is about 2.2 times heavier than one lb. Someone who treats the two units as roughly equal will badly underestimate a weight limit — for luggage, shipping, or gym plates.
Why do airlines list weight limits in both kg and lbs?
Travelers arrive from countries using different default units. Most of the world uses kg. The US mostly uses lbs. Airlines list both to avoid confusion at check-in.
Is 150 lbs the same as 68 kg?
Close, but not exact. 150 lbs is precisely 68.04 kg. “68 kg” is a rounded figure — fine for casual use, too loose for a medical dosage calculation.
How many pounds is 101 kg?
222.67 lbs. That’s just over the rough mental shortcut of “220 lbs for 100 kg,” a benchmark many people round to without checking the extra kilogram.
Why does the conversion factor have so many decimal places?
The kilogram and the pound were defined independently, by different standards bodies, centuries apart. Nobody designed them to align neatly. The full figure is 2.20462262185. It gets rounded to 2.20462 for everyday use because the extra digits change a typical result by less than a hundredth of a pound.
Precision and rounding
For body weight, luggage, and most everyday purposes, two decimal places is plenty. 166.01 lbs instead of 166.0138 lbs loses a fraction of an ounce — nothing that matters.
For anything regulatory or safety-critical, keep more precision. Aviation cargo limits, pharmaceutical dosing, and precision manufacturing can’t absorb rounding error the same way.
A 0.01 lb error looks tiny on one item. Multiply it across a large shipment or a production batch, and it compounds fast. When in doubt, carry at least four decimal places in the multiplier (2.2046) and round only the final displayed answer.
