How to Use This Tool

1 centimeter = 0.0328 feet. Divide centimeters by 30.48 to get feet — that’s the exact number of centimeters in one foot. Multiply feet by 30.48 to go the other way.

That single number, 30.48, is the only fact you need. Everything else on this page is that formula applied to the heights people search for most.

Formula

feet = centimeters ÷ 30.48
centimeters = feet × 30.48

Worked example: 162 cm ÷ 30.48 = 5.31 feet. In feet and inches, that’s 5 feet 3.78 inches — multiply the leftover .31 by 12 to get 3.78 inches.

Reverse example: 5.5 feet × 30.48 = 167.64 cm.

Third example, a taller height: 185 cm ÷ 30.48 = 6.07 feet, or 6 feet 0.83 inches — just over 6 feet.

Every row uses the same two steps. Divide the centimeter figure by 30.48 for decimal feet. Multiply the leftover decimal by 12 for the inch remainder.

There’s no shortcut that stays accurate across the whole range. For a centimeter value not listed above, run the formula yourself.

Why this conversion trips people up

The error isn’t in the math. It’s in reading the decimal output. 5.31 feet does not mean “5 feet 31 inches,” and it doesn’t mean “5 feet 3 inches” either.

The .31 is a fraction of a whole foot, not a count of inches. You have to multiply it by 12 to turn that fraction into inches.

This is the single most common mistake with cm-to-feet conversions. People round 5.31 down to “5’3″” when the real answer is 5’3.78″.

That gap looks small on its own. But it compounds fast when comparing close heights. 162 cm and 163 cm differ by exactly 0.39 inches — easy to lose if you round at the first decimal instead of carrying the calculation through.

A second, smaller error: some people convert using 30 cm per foot instead of the exact 30.48. That rounding feels harmless.

It isn’t. It throws off a 180 cm conversion by about a third of an inch. A 400 cm conversion is off by well over an inch — enough to matter for a doorway or a piece of furniture that needs to clear an opening.

Converting the other direction: feet to centimeters

FeetCentimeters
4 ft121.92 cm
4.5 ft137.16 cm
5 ft152.4 cm
5.5 ft167.64 cm
6 ft182.88 cm
6.5 ft198.12 cm
7 ft213.36 cm

To go from feet-and-inches to centimeters directly, convert the inches to a decimal fraction of a foot first. Divide by 12, then add that to the whole feet, then multiply the total by 30.48.

For 5’8″: 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667. Add 5 to get 5.667 ft. Multiply by 30.48 to get about 172.72 cm.

What these heights actually look like

162 cm (5’3.78″) sits close to the average adult female height in several countries. It’s also roughly the height of a standard kitchen counter plus a stool.

175 cm (5’8.9″) sits right around global average adult male height. 180 cm (5’10.87″) lands near a standard interior doorway’s midpoint reference. It also counts as a “tall average” male height across much of Europe and North America.

240 cm (7’10.49″) is taller than a regulation basketball hoop rim, which sits at 10 feet, minus about two feet. That’s useful context for picturing ceiling clearance or an unusually tall doorway.

If you’re trying to picture a specific centimeter measurement, converting to feet is the first step. Comparing it to a familiar object — a door, a counter, a person you know — is what actually makes an abstract number click.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet is 170 cm?
170 cm is 5.58 feet, or 5 feet 6.93 inches — just under 5’7″.

How many feet is 163 cm?
163 cm is 5.35 feet, or 5 feet 4.17 inches.

Is 5 feet exactly 152.4 cm?
Yes. A foot is defined as exactly 30.48 cm, so 5 feet is exactly 152.4 cm with no rounding involved anywhere in the conversion.

How do I convert cm to feet and inches instead of decimal feet?
Divide by 30.48 to get decimal feet. Keep the whole number as feet. Multiply the remaining decimal by 12 to get inches. For 175 cm: 175 ÷ 30.48 = 5.74 ft, so 5 feet, then 0.74 × 12 ≈ 8.9 inches, giving 5’8.9″.

Why is a foot 30.48 cm and not a rounder number?
The foot is an imperial unit standardized against the meter in 1959. That year, 1 yard was fixed as exactly 0.9144 meters. A foot is one-third of a yard, so 30.48 cm is the exact result. It was never meant to round cleanly.

How tall is 201 cm in feet?
201 cm is 6.59 feet, or 6 feet 7.13 inches. That’s well above 6’6″ — close to the height of many professional basketball centers.

Does the conversion factor change for very small or very large measurements?
No. 30.48 cm per foot is a fixed definition, not an approximation that shifts with scale. The same divide-by-30.48 formula works whether you’re converting a 5 cm object or a 400 cm one. Only the output number changes, not the method.
